PORT OF SPAIN, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese lawmaker Wang Zhaoguo held talks Monday with Trinidad and Tobago President George Maxwell Richards on bilateral relations.

During the talks, Wang, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, said that Trinidad and Tobago was one of the first countries in the Caribbean region to establish diplomatic relations with China.

The two nations have conducted frequent high-level exchanges, deepened political trust and reaped a bumper harvest in cooperation in various areas such as economy and trade since they forged formal ties 38 years ago, Wang said.

China attaches great importance to friendly cooperation with Trinidad and Tobago and appreciates its consistent adherence to the one-China policy, he said.

China stands ready to work with Trinidad and Tobago to boost high-level exchanges, expand practical cooperation and substantialize bilateral friendly cooperative relations in a bid to lift their ties to a higher level, said Wang.

Richards, for his part, lauded the progress in bilateral ties and friendly cooperation in various areas.

Trinidad and Tobago will, as always, adhere to the one-China policy, he said.

Greatly appreciating the important contributions made by overseas Chinese in Trinidad and Tobago to its economic and social development over the past 200 years, Richards said that the close friendship between the two peoples deserves treasuring.

Trinidad and Tobago is willing to work with China to continuously promote the development of bilateral ties, he said.

Wang arrived in Trinidad and Tobago Saturday for an official goodwill visit. Trinidad and Tobago is the last leg of Wang's three-nation tour in Latin America, which has taken him to Chile and Brazil.
