China's top legislator Wu Bangguo on Monday pledged to work with Australia to enhance comprehensive cooperative relations.

"We always attach great importance to promoting the ties with Australia," said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature.
Wu said when meeting with President of the Australian Senate John Hogg that China would work with Australia to take care of each other's core interests and major concern, in line with the spirit of mutual respect and equality.
Hailing the China-Australia relations since forging diplomatic ties 37 years ago, Wu said the two countries enjoyed frequent highlevel visits, increasing political mutual trust and rapid growth of economic and trade cooperation.
China and Australia, both as important nations in the Asia-Pacific region, shared broad common interests in safeguarding regional peace, stability and cooperation, in promoting economic growth of the region and the world at large, and in dealing with global challenges.
"A healthy and stable China-Australia relationship accords with fundamental interests of the two countries and the two peoples," he noted.
Wu said the NPC would work with the Australia parliament to improve the regular exchange mechanism and to enhance cooperation at all levels, in an effort to play an constructive role in advancing relationship between the two nations.
Hogg said to actively enhance relations with China was a consensus of all social circles in Australia.
The Australian Federal Parliament gave priority to promoting relations with the NPC, he noted, hoping that the two sides would increase exchanges and cooperation to help lift the Australia-China ties into a new level.
He reiterated that Australia would firmly adhere to the one-China policy.
Hogg started the visit Sunday at the invitation of Wu. Besides Beijing, he is also scheduled to visit Shanghai, Sichuan and Tibet.
