Fiji highlights importance of China top legislator's upcoming visit

  SUVA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Fijian government here Sunday stressed the importance of the upcoming visit by China's top legislator Wu Bangguo, saying Wu's visit symbolizes the growing relations between Fiji and China since diplomatic relations were forged in 1975.

  Relations between the two countries have significantly grown specially in the last 10 years, which has seen leaders from both sides expressing optimism towards strengthening relations, Fiji's Ministry of Information said in a media release.

  It is expected that this visit by Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), and other high level exchanges will result in closer cooperation in international and regional affairs and provide a platform for more investment and trade, said the release.

  The Fijian government is making all preparations to host Wu as he visits the country later this month, during which Wu will meet with Fiji's President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, the release said.

  In accordance with a government-to-government protocol, all areas of formalities including security will be afforded to Wu given his ranking in China's leadership portfolio.

  It was announced that Wu and his Chinese delegation will arrive in Fiji on Sept. 20 and be accorded a traditional and formal ceremony of welcome.
