China’s top legislator, Wu Bangguo, has put forward proposals for closer China-Myanmar ties during his visit to the country. Wu made the proposals during talks with the Speaker of Myanmar’s House of Representatives, Thura U Shwe Mann. The two have exchanged views on bilateral ties, parliament exchanges and issues of common concern.

During the meeting with Thura U Shwe Mann, the Chairman of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress, Wu Bangguo, voiced his hopes that China and Myanmar could deepen ties further, enhance mutually-beneficial cooperation and promote common development.

Wu has put forward proposals, including the advancement of large-scale projects, such as the China-Myanmar oil and natural gas pipeline project, and joint efforts for ensuring stability in the border region.

He’s urged the two countries to maintain high-level visits and timely cooperation on issues of mutual concern, as well as the further development of a comprehensive strategic partnership.

He said the two countries should take positive measures to deepen win-win cooperation and ensure the successful advancement of such large projects like China-Myanmar oil and natural gas pipeline project, so as to encourage the enterprises to gain confidence in bilateral trade exchanges.

Wu said China is willing to continue to enhance cooperation with Myanmar on border management and jointly safeguard stability in the border region, adding that China respects Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and hopes the relevant parties of Myanmar could solve problems through peaceful negotiation.

The Chinese leader also suggested the two countries step up coordination in working with multilateral organisations like the UN, the East Asia Cooperation, ASEAN’s regional forum, and the greater Mekong Sub-Regional Economic Cooperation.

Thura U Shwe Mann says Myanmar is keen to promote cooperation with China in areas of investment and trade, through governmental exchanges between the two countries.

Wu arrived on Wednesday from Iran. Myanmar is the second stop on Wu’s four-nation tour, which will also take him to Sri Lanka and Fiji.
