MADRID, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Visiting China's top legislator Wu Bangguo held talks with Spain's Senate President Pio Garcia-Escudero on Friday, both agreeing to boost bilateral ties as well as parliamentary exchanges.

During previous meetings or talks, the leaders of both countries have showed strong aspiration to further promote political mutual trust, enhance pragmatic cooperation and increase people-to-people exchanges, said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC).

Both sides have expressed hope to jointly tackle financial crises and advance common development through closer cooperation, he said.

Wu, who is on a six-day official goodwill visit to Spain, held separate meetings earlier with Spanish King Juan Carlos, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and Congress President Jesus Posada.

"At present, China-Spain relationship is facing new opportunities. The two sides should lift their comprehensive cooperation to a higher level as the two countries are to mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties," said Wu.

Although China and Spain have different political systems, they are both faced with the tasks of developing economy, improving people's lives and improving democracy and the legal system, said Wu.

He suggested the two legislative bodies continue to step up friendly exchanges and cooperation and play a positive role in facilitating country-to-country relations.

Garcia-Escudero, for his part, deemed China as one of the important partners of Spain, saying his country would work with China to promote bilateral cooperation in such fields as trade, education, sports and tourism.

The Senate president said that Spain, with its unique influence in Latin America, is willing to act as a bridge to promote friendly exchanges and cooperation between China and the countries in the region.
