MOSCOW, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo on Friday called for further cooperation on technological innovation between China and Russia.

"To boost cooperation on technological innovation is an important element in reaching the target which the two heads of state have set for the next decade," Wu said during talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedevv at Skolkovo innovation center, Russia's Silicon Valley.

Cooperation on technological innovation was not only conducive to the implementation of each other's domestic development strategy, but also helpful for their joint efforts to handle increasingly severe technological competition in the world, said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC).

Wu suggested the two countries strengthen overall planning and step up cooperation on emerging strategic industries to promote the adjustment of their economic structures and advance industrial optimization and upgrading.

Echoing Wu's remarks, Medvedev said the establishment of the Skolkovo innovation center was an important measure for bolstering the development of Russia's high-tech industry.

He hoped the two countries would expand cooperation on investment and technological innovation to create new opportunities for their trade cooperation.

Wu and Medvedev also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.

They said the two countries had conducted active and effective coordination on international affairs.

The two leaders also agreed to enhance strategic cooperation on such major issues as the management of global economic governance, climate change, the fight against the "three evil forces," and strengthening coordination within the framework of the United Nations, Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS in a bid to safeguard their common interests and establish a more just and reasonable international political and economic order.

Wu also conveyed greetings from Chinese President Hu Jintao to Medvedev, saying the NPC would increase cooperation with the Russian parliament to make new contributions to the development of bilateral ties.

Medvedev said Russia and China had kept frequent high-level exchanges and made rapid progress in cooperation in various fields.

He said Russia regarded China as the most important strategic partner of cooperation and would work with China to continue to boost all-round cooperation and bring more benefits to the two peoples.

Wu will conclude his four-day trip to Moscow on Saturday. Russia is the first leg of his four-nation Eurasian tour, which will also take him to Belarus, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
