Top Chinese, South African lawmakers confer on ties, parliamentary cooperation

  CAPE TOWN, South Africa, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo held talks here on Wednesday with his South African counterpart Max Sisulu, Speaker of South African National Assembly. The two called on to further improve relations between China and South Africa and cement cooperation between the two parliaments.

  Wu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislative body, highlighted the progress scored on the bilateral relations between the two nations in the recent years, noting that the bilateral relations have been growing with more and more strategic significance and global influence.

  Citing the fact that South Africa has become China's biggest trading partner in Africa and the most popular destination for Chinese tourists and students in the continent, Wu said he hopes his visit would help push forward the bilateral cooperation which already brought concrete benefit to the two peoples to a higher level.

  When on the interparliamentary cooperation, the Chinese top legislator put forward a three-point proposal, suggesting the two parliaments strengthen the high-level exchange among governmental organs and legislative bodies, intensify the cooperation among various special committees, friendly groups and the young members of the two parliaments, and give a full play to the legislative function of the two parliaments to slate relevant laws and regulations to help promote the implementation of the cooperation projects.

  The two parliaments should also cement their collaboration in the international and regional parliamentary organizations and jointly safeguard the interests of the two nations as well as other developing countries, Wu added.

  Agreeing with Wu's proposal, Sisulu also voiced his commitment to nurture the cooperation between the two parliaments. He said South Africa regards China as a close friend and an important partner.

  The South African National Assembly would work diligently for furthered cooperation between the two parliaments and expects see the two sides to establish a regular exchange mechanism at an early date, Sisulu said.

  The two parliament leaders also praised the robust growth of China-Africa relations, both expressing the willingness to push forward the new China-Africa strategic partnership within the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
