Yan Junqi, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, met here Wednesday with parliamentary delegations from Pacific island nations.

The delegations were led by the Honorable Tu'ilakepa, speaker of the Parliament of the Kingdom of Tonga; Paliknoa Welly, chairman of the External Affairs Committee of the Federated States of Micronesia; Manu Korovulavula, chairman of the Public Accounts Committee in Fiji; and Billy Talagi, chairman of the Bills Committee of the Parliament of Niue.

The four delegations of the Pacific island countries are paying an official goodwill visit to China together from June 14 to 21 at the invitation of Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with the delegates Tuesday and said China and Pacific island countries should expand economic and trade cooperation to cope with the global economic downturn.

He said the two sides should also increase coordination in responding to climate change and other global challenges, which would help regional stability and sustainable development.
