The 100th anniversary of the birth of the late Vice Premier Geng Biao was commemorated Wednesday, with a call for Party members to learn from his loyalty, honesty and self-discipline.
Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), and Vice President Xi Jinping attended the commemorative meeting.
Wang Zhaoguo, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, said Geng had devoted his life to fighting for the cause of communism and always remained loyal to the Party and the people.
"He dared speak the truth, stood against falsity and perfunctoriness, studied hard and worked conscientiously," Wang said. "He was also self-disciplined and never sought personal fame or wealth."
Born in the central Hunan Province, Geng joined the CPC in 1928. He became vice premier in 1978 and vice chairman of the 6th NPC Standing Committee in 1983.
Other participants at the meeting included Guo Boxiong, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, State Councilor Ma Kai and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.
Geng's family and friends were also in attendance.
