China lawmakers on Thursday began deliberation of an extradition treaty with Portugal.
The bill was submitted by the State Council, China's Cabinet, for review at the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature.
The treaty was signed by Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui and Portuguese Foreign Minister Louis Amado in Beijing on Jan. 31, 2007.
Its content conforms to the basic principles and judicial practices of China's laws and serves the country's interests, the State Council said in a report to lawmakers.
Its adoption would help promote China's judicial cooperation with Portugal and promote friendly relations, the State Council said.
The treaty was expected to be ratified at the six-day session that lasts until Tuesday.
