Visiting top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo praised U.S. lawmakers' support for closer bilateral ties and outlined China's stance on climate change when he met leaders of the U.S. parliament group on China at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, appreciated the efforts made by the leaders of U.S. Congress in improving connections between the two parliaments and two countries.

He hoped the U.S. congressmen would continue to support China-U.S. cooperation and the development of bilateral ties.

The U.S. parliament group leaders, like Rick Larsen, co-chairman of U.S.-China Working Group in the House of Representative, said the United States and China were two countries of influence. The cooperation between the two was necessary not only for their own development, but also for the maintenance of world peace and development.

The U.S. leaders said they are willing to continue playing an active role for the development of U.S.-China relations.

Wu also introduced China's policies and the measures taken by the Chinese government in dealing with the issue of climate change.

He pointed out that climate change was a challenge faced by the whole world and needed the international community to jointly cooperate and respond.

China, which has made saving resources and protecting the environment its basic national policy and realizing sustainable development as its national strategy, has always kept full attention on world climate change. The country has not only started a National Program for Responding to Climate Change, but also has begun to amend laws such as the Renewable Resources Act.

China is now making great efforts in developing renewable resources and clean energy to improve its energy infrastructure as well as phasing out backward processes to cut carbon dioxide emissions. The country is also promoting programs to plant more trees and is actively joining in international efforts to address climate change.

Wu said that, under the U.S.-China Ten Year Energy and Environment Cooperation Framework, China is willing to strengthen cooperation with the United States in the fields such as a low-carbon economy in order to expand growth areas in Sino-U.S. ties and contribute to adapting to the changing world climate.

Wu arrived in Washington on Tuesday. It is the first official visit to the United States made by a top Chinese legislator in the past two decades.

The Unites States is the final leg of Wu's three-nation Americas tour, which also took him to Cuba and the Bahamas.
