Chinese representative to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)'s 120th Assembly said here on Tuesday that China supports the IPU's cooperation with the United Nations.

Uyunqimg, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), said in a meeting with IPU President Theo-Ben Gurirab that the Chinese side hopes that such cooperation will help shore up economic growth worldwide and achieve the UN's Millennium Development Goals.

The IPU is the world's most influential multilateral parliamentary organization, and serves as an important platform for cooperation among parliaments of different countries, Uyunqimg noted.

She commended the IPU's role in safeguarding world peace, combating terrorism, promoting democracy, boosting world economic growth as well as guarding human rights.

Since accession to the IPU in 1984, China's NPC has actively participated in every session of the international body's assemblies, Uyunqimg said, adding that the NPC anticipates more exchanges with the IPU.

For his part, Gurirab said the IPU is working toward closer cooperation with the UN, and he welcomes support from countries including China.

The April 5-10 IPU Assembly attracted over 1,000 legislators from around the world to the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. The delegates are scheduled to discuss the political, economic and social situation in the world with the overall theme of "Parliaments: Building Peace, Democracy and Development in times of crisis."
