China's top legislator Friday called for expansion of Sino-Russian cooperation in a meeting with Dmitry Mezentsev, visiting deputy chairman of the Russian Federation Council.

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said the two nations should deepen political mutual trust and boost strategic cooperation to promote the bilateral relationships.

China-Russia relations have seen stable and healthy development after the two sides established a strategic partnership of cooperation, Wu said.

This year provided opportunities for closer ties, Wu said. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. China will also kick off the "Year of Russian Language" here Friday night to boost cultural exchanges.

The NPC was ready to work with its Russian counterpart to improve the bilateral exchange mechanism to achieve more tangible results, Wu added.

Mezentsev said the Russian Federation Council also would like to boost exchanges and cooperation with the NPC and work to promote the China-Russia strategic partnership of cooperation.
