Visiting Chinese legislators, headed by Li Jianguo, vice chairman and general secretary of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), held talks Thursday with Japan's upper house councilors on the promotion of bilateral ties.

At the third meeting of a communication mechanism between the NPC, China's top legislative body, and the House of Councilors of the Japanese Diet, the two sides lauded the important headway in China-Japan relations over the previous year.

The two sides are of the opinion that as China and Japan are countries with global clout, the stable, sound and long-term development of bilateral ties are in the fundamental interests of both countries and peoples and conducive to peace and prosperity of the region as well as of the world at large.

They hold that the two sides need to size the current favorable opportunity to implement the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries, continuously boost mutual trust, properly handle relevant issues and push forward the strategic and mutually beneficial relations between the two countries.

The lawmakers of the two countries also exchanged views on such issues as cooperation on economy and trade, energy and environmental preservation, climate change, food safety and the ongoing global financial crisis.

The legislators fully recognized the significant role interparliamentary exchanges played in promoting bilateral relations and pledged continued efforts to advance mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

The two sides decided to hold the fourth meeting of the interparliamentary communication mechanism in China next year.
