Top legislator Wu Bangguo on Friday pledged to increase exchanges and cooperation with the Ethiopian parliament.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature, made the remarks during a meeting with the Speaker of Ethiopia's Council of People's Representatives Teshome Toga. He was here on a visit from July 10 to 16 as guest of Wu.

Hailing the existing sound exchanges and cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two nations, Wu said the NPC valued the relation with the Ethiopian parliament.

The NPC was ready to work with the Ethiopian parliament to maintain the momentum of high-level visits, and increase exchanges in special committees, friendship groups and other working organs.

As to the China-Ethiopia relationship, Wu said the two nations had enjoyed healthy and stable development of bilateral ties since forging diplomatic relations 38 years ago.

China and Ethiopia, in recent years, enjoyed frequent high level visits, increasing political mutual trust, fruitful cooperation in economy, trade, education, public health, human resources training and infrastructure construction, and close coordination in international affairs, Wu said. He noted China was satisfied with it.

China regarded Ethiopia as important partner in Africa, and would work with the country to push forward the bilateral comprehensive cooperative partnership, Wu said.

He applauded Ethiopia's firm adherence to the one-China policy.

Expressing appreciation for China's assistance to Ethiopia, Teshome said the Chinese people were sincere friends of Ethiopia.

He said Ethiopia's Council of People's Representatives was willing to expand exchanges with the NPC in a bid to make more contribution to the growth of the Ethiopia-China relation.

Teshome believed the Beijing Olympic Games would be a grand sporting event with high quality and distinctive features.
