Top leaders: China, Greece to enhance cooperation

Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday met with Greek President Karolos Papoulias separately and the leaders agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation.

Wu, National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee chairman, highlighted the recent growth of bilateral relations, especially since the two nations forged the comprehensive strategic partnership in 2006. He voiced hope that the two sides could step up cooperation on marine transport and deepen exchanges and cooperation in trade, tourism, the Olympics and culture.

Wu applauded the frequent friendly exchanges between the two parliaments, calling on the two legislatures to make bigger contributions to friendship between the two nations, bilateral pragmatic cooperation in various fields and development of bilateral relations.

Papoulias said with joint efforts of the two sides, bilateral friendly cooperation of mutual benefits has been producing rich fruits constantly.

He expressed hope that the two nations could further their cooperation in various sectors.

Wen expressed gratitude for Greece's sympathy and assistance to China's earthquake-hit region and its support of the Beijing Olympics, noting China is glad to have such a good friend as Greece in the European Union.

The two nations enjoy vast prospects in bilateral cooperation in ocean shipping, logistics, tourism, telecom and small and medium-sized companies, Wen said.

He called on relevant departments and businesses of the two sides to step up contact and innovate modes of cooperation to achieve win-win results.

Papoulias said it is of special significance that the Olympic Games will be held in China, following Greece. Greece fully supports the Beijing Olympics and the whole nation sincerely wishes success for the Beijing Olympic Games.

He said Greece is ready to work with China to further cooperation of mutual benefits in ocean shipping, tourism, telecom, high technology and agriculture.
