China holds symposium on late general's 100th birthday

  BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- A symposium was held Wednesday in Beijing to commemorate the centenary of late Chinese general Ye Fei.

  Ye, who was born in 1914 and died in 1999, once served as commander of the People's Liberation Army Navy and vice chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee. He reached the rank of general in 1955.

  The symposium was attended by Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, the national legislature.

  Li Jianguo, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, said at the meeting that Ye made "outstanding contributions" to the country.

  Li called on the people to carry on the traditions of the old generation of revolutionaries to contribute to the great course of reform and opening-up.
