Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on Wednesday called for redoubled efforts to provide judicial support to ensure steady and relatively rapid growth of China's economy.

Zhou made the call when joining deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC) from the northeastern province of Heilongjiang to deliberate the work report on the Supreme People's Procuratorate and Supreme People's Court.

Judicial authorities should strike hard on economic crimes and settle economic disputes to maintain economic order, Zhou said.

They should also crack down on serious criminal offences to ensure social stability, and enforce the law fairly and efficiently to protect social justice, Zhou said.

Efforts must made with the focus on meeting people's needs, protecting the interests of the people, promoting social harmony and enhancing supervision over the use of power, Zhou said.

He also urged authorities to boost competence of the judicial personnel, and strengthen anti-corruption campaigns among them.
