A symposium was held on Thursday here at the Great Hall of the People to mark the 100th birthday of the late Liao Chengzhi, who was vice chairman of China's top legislature.
Liao was hailed as an excellent member of the Communist Party of China (CPC), a proletarian revolutionary, an outstanding public figure and an excellent leader of the Party and the state.
Liao has "ineffaceable merit" in the history of the Chinese revolution, the cause of building socialism and the consolidation of unity of the patriotic united front, said Wang Zhaoguo, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), at the symposium.
He also contributed much to reunification of the motherland, friendly relations among the peoples of the world and world peace, Wang added.
A native of Huiyang County in southeastern Guangdong Province, Liao was born in September 1908 and died in June 1983.
He joined the CPC in 1928. After the founding of New China in 1949, he made unremitting and outstanding contributions to overseas Chinese affairs and united front work.
He served as vice chairman of the Fifth NPC Standing Committee.

Wu Bangguo, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau and chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, attended the meeting.
