China's top legislature on Sunday approved the cabinet nomination of Meng Jianzhu, former Party chief of east China's Jiangxi Province, as the country's new minister of Public Security.
Meng, of Han nationality and born in 1947 in Wuxian County of Jiangsu Province, joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1971.
He worked on Qianwei Farm in Shanghai for 18 years. In 1986 he became secretary of Chuansha county committee of the CPC, Shanghai. In 1993 he was appointed vice-mayor of Shanghai and became deputy secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee in 1996.
He was appointed as secretary of the CPC Provincial Committee of Jiangxi in 2001.
Meng, with a master's degree in engineering, is recognized for restructuring high-risk industries, such as coal mining, and financing impoverished people during his tenure as Party secretary of Jiangxi Province.
Meng replaces Zhou Yongkang who was elected Politburo Standing Committee member of the CPC Central Committee at the first plenary session of the 17th CPC Central Committee early this week.
Zhou Yongkang, of Han nationality and born in December 1942, joined the CPC in November 1964.
Zhou, a native of east China's Jiangsu Province, once served as general manager of the China National Petroleum and Natural Gas Corporation, Minister of Land and Resources and the Party Secretary of southwestern Sichuan Province.
