BEIJING, June 30 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature held a special lecture for its members to study national food safety report given by the country's agricultural expert.

At the lecture, presided over by Wu Banggo, Chairman of the 11th National People's Congress Standing Committee, Professor Zhu Xinkai with Renmin University of China gave a speech on China's food safety situation and development of modern agriculture.

Although China has made great harvests in the past ten years, the country still face challenges in food safety due to increasing costs of grain production and shortage of land and water resources, Prof. Zhu said.

The expert suggested that more strict measures to protect farmland should be implemented and more technological innovations, such as water-saving irrigation, should be introduced to grain production.
