THE HAGUE, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo met here Tuesday with Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, saying China regards the European country as an important partner in the region.

"China attaches great importance to friendly cooperation with the Netherlands," said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), during a meeting with the Queen shortly after his arrival at Amsterdam for an official goodwill visit.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries and the development of bilateral relations now stand at a new starting point, said Wu.

Wu expected to have in-depth exchange of views with Dutch leaders as well as people from all circles in a bid to further promote mutual understanding and facilitate mutually-beneficial cooperation.

Wu hoped the Dutch royal family could continue to support the development of Sino-Dutch relationship.

The Netherlands is the first stop of Wu's four-European nation tour, which will also take him to Croatia, Luxembourg and Spain.
