OTTAWA, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Lu Yongxiang, vice chairman of China's National People's Congress Standing Committee, met Tuesday with both speakers of Canada's Parliament to discuss the improvement of bilateral relations between the two countries.
Lu said during his meeting with Senate Speaker Noel Kinsella and Peter Milliken, speaker of the House of Commons, that China would like to join hands with Canada to take their relationship to a higher level.
Since the establishment of bilateral relations in 1970, Sino-Canadian ties have brought substantial benefits to the two peoples, Lu said. He said the relationship also has brought peace, stability and prosperity to Asia and the Pacific region and the rest of the world.
The issues concerning Taiwan and Tibet are of China'a core interests, Lu said while expressing hope that Canada will continue to uphold its One-China policy.
For their part, the speakers expressed satisfaction with the healthy momentum in the development of bilateral relations.
They said that the Senate and the House of Commons will continuously pursue the One-China policy, adding that they hope to enhance cooperation in such fields as economy, culture, education, environment protection, and agriculture.
The Chinese delegation led by Lu arrived in Canada on Saturday for a goodwill visit at the invitation of the House of Commons.
