Chinese leaders stress people's well-being in discussion with lawmakers

    BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Zhang Dejiang and other leaders on Friday joined lawmakers in examination of a government work report, calling for more efforts to improve people's well-being.

    The report was delivered by Premier Li Keqiang at the opening of the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, on Wednesday.

    In his discussion with NPC deputies from Fujian Province, Zhang urged local authorities to formulate policies according to people's needs, work for the people and let the majority of people get tangible benefits.

    He said the government should give more preferential policies concerning people's well-being to the needy groups and poor areas.

    Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the country's top political advisory body, joined a panel discussion with lawmakers from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

    Yu called for more efforts in improving people's well-being, including education, employment, housing, social security and poverty alleviation.

    Yu also urged local authorities to crack down on terrorism resolutely and ensure stability in Xinjiang.

    Liu Yunshan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, urged local authorities to solve the most practical problems of the utmost and immediate concern to the people when he joined a panel discussion with lawmakers from Jiangsu Province.

    Wang Qishan, another member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, urged discipline authorities at all levels to do more to improve Party conduct, promote integrity and combat corruption when taking part in discussion with lawmakers from Henan Province.

    In a panel discussion with lawmakers from Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli urged the regional government to take advantage of the opportunities brought by the construction of the Silk Road Economic Belt and develop competitive industries with their own specialties.
