Chongqing party chief Bo Xilai urged on Friday that the municipality be built into a safe and health city so as to satisfy its 30 million people.
While participating in a panel deliberation of the government work report by the Chongqing delegation at the ongoing session of the National People's Congress. Bo said the crackdown on gangdom in Chongqing in southwestern China was to create a favorable environment for the people and local business.
"On this issue, shall we pretend to be deaf or shall we be responsible for the people? We chose the latter," said Bo, secretary of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
"We can not make it 100 percent correct, but we tried our efforts 100 percent," Bo told a crowd of reporters after the panel discussion.
He said that Chongqing is making every effort to create a sound environment for the upcoming 18th National Congress of the CPC later this year.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of Chongqing being uplifted to a municipality directly under the central government from a mega city in Sichuan Province.
Bo said Chongqing's officials of different time did a lot of work to build up its momentum of development today.
"It is like a relay match, and we are now more confident than ever to further the development of Chongqing," Bo said.
Bo said the Chongqing municipal government had also done a lot in reform and opening up, such as the reform on residential registration system, supporting small enterprises and government direct funding for the unemployed citizens to start up business.
He said the municipal government would also continue the crackdown on gangdom and the campaign of singing old revolutionary songs, which are often talked about.
