China and Colombia

The year 2010 marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Colombia and witnessed steady growth of the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.

The two sides maintained high-level contact. On 7 February, President Hu Jintao and President Alvaro Uribe Velez exchanged congratulatory messages to mark the 30th anniversary of China-Colombia diplomatic ties. In September, State Councilor and Defense Minister General Liang Guanglie paid an official visit to Colombia, during which he met with President Juan Manuel Santos. In December, State Councilor Liu Yandong paid an official visit to Comlombia and met with President Juan Manuel Santos and Vice President Angelino Garzon. The two sides signed the Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement Between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Colombia and the 2011-2014 Executive Program for Education Cooperation Between the Ministry of Education of China and the Ministry of National Education of Colombia. In August, as Special Envoy of the Chinese government, Minister of Justice Wu Aiying attended the power transfer ceremony of the President of Colombia.

In May, Vice President Francisco Santos Calderon attended the Opening Ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo and met with Vice President Xi Jinping. In July, Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez Merizalde attended Colombia's National Pavilion Day at the Shanghai World Expo. Former President Andres Pastrana Arango, President of the Supreme Court of Colombia Jaime Alberto Arrubla Paucar and nearly 20 groups of ministerial officials visited China and attended the Shanghai World Expo.

Exchanges and cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, culture, and military further expanded. Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan, Vice Minister of Agriculture Zhang Taolin, Head of the Discipline Inspection Team of the Ministry of Transportation Yang Limin, Director General of the Political Department of the Ministry of Justice Yin Jinhua, Director of the Palace Museum Zheng Xinmiao, and Director General of the Department of Military Training and Services of the Headquarters of the General Staff Major General Chen Zhaohai visited Colombia. China and Colombia held the second meeting of the Joint Committee on Agriculture Cooperation. The two sides signed the Memorandum of Understanding to Facilitate Group Travelling of Chinese Tourists to the Republic of Colombia. The Confucius Institute in Medellin was officially in operation. The Shanghai Museum and the Gold Museum of Colombia jointly held an exhibition themed the "Imperial's Dragons of China" in Colombia.

After Colombia was hit by floods, the Chinese government provided US$200,000 in cash to Colombia.
