China and Trinidad&Tobago

The relationship of friendship and cooperation for mutual benefit and development between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago grew steadily in 2010.

Political mutual trust between the two countries was further enhanced. In May, General election was held in Trinidad and Tobago and a new government was formed. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi sent message of congratulations to the newly elected Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissesar and Minister of Foreign Affairs Surujrattan Rambachan respectively. In September, a working group from the Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs of the MFA visited Trinidad and Tobago, during which it met with Prime Minister Bissesar, Minister of Trade and Industry Stephen Cadiz and held talks with Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Margaret Parillon. In March, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Trinidad and Tobago Barendra Sinanan paid a private visit to China. In April, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Margaret Parillon visited China. In September, President George Richards of Trinidad and Tobago paid a private visit to China and Minister of Trade and Industry Stephen Cadiz attended the Expo Central China.

Bilateral trade continued to grow and exchanges and cooperation in cultural and other fields enjoyed sound momentum. Bilateral trade reached a historic high despite the impact of international financial crisis. The Tianjin Song and Dance Troupe and the Nanjing Acrobatics Troupe gave performances in Trinidad and Tobago. The government of Trinidad and Tobago actively participated in the Shanghai World Expo, and successfully held the "Trinidad and Tobago Week" event. Trinidad and Tobago's steel drum artists participated in relevant performances during the Expo. Trinidad and Tobago's Wushu Association took part in the International Shaolin Wushu Festival in Zhengzhou.(Last Update: 2011/08/22)
