Bilateral Relations between China and Belarus

In 2010, the all-round friendly and cooperative relations between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Belarus enjoyed healthy and steady development, with fruitful cooperation in the political, economic, trade, cultural and military fields.

The two sides had frequent high-level contacts and enhanced political mutual trust. On 24 December, President Hu Jintao sent a message of congratulations to President Alexander Lukashenko on his reelection as the President of Belarus. From 24 to 25 March, Vice President Xi Jinping visited Belarus. He had talks with President Lukashenko and met with Prime Minister Sergei Sidorsky, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Boris Batura and Vladimir Andreichehko, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly respectively. On 14 and 20 April, after earthquake struck Yushu, Qinghai Province of China, President Lukashenko sent letters of condolences to President Hu Jintao twice. And the government of Belarus provided US$1 million of humanitarian assistance to the disaster area. From 29 April to 2 May, Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Burya attended the opening ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo in China. From 12 to 14 September, NPC Vice Chairman Jiang Shusheng visited Belarus. He met with President Lukashenko, Chairman Vladimir Andreichehko, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Leonid Krupets and First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Semashko respectively. From 10 to 12 October, President Lukashenko attended the National Pavilion Day activities for Belarus at the Shanghai World Expo. President Hu held talks with him and the two leaders reached important consensus on deepening China-Belarus relations and practical cooperation in various fields. A number of Chinese delegations from the Ministry of Commerce, the National Audit Office, the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs visited Belarus and achieved fruitful outcomes on cooperation in specific areas.

China and Belarus enjoyed mutual support on issues concerning each other's core interests and maintained close cooperation in international and regional organizations such as the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Belarus firmly supported China's position on matters related with Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang and human rights.

Progress was made in China-Belarus economic cooperation and trade in various fields. On 28 June, the 11th session of the Belarusian-Chinese Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation was held in Minsk. Joint production of household appliances by Chinese and Belarusian companies and the upgrading of Belarusian power plants and cement plants by Chinese companies were making smooth progress. The two sides identified new projects such as the Chinese industrial park and the construction of a landing strip for the Minsk international airport.

The exchanges and cooperation between China and Belarus in culture, education, science and technology, military and other fields moved forward steadily. In October, Ministry of Culture of Belarus sent several art groups to participate in the Belarus Culture Days and the Shanghai World Expo in China. China held a number of activities in many parts of Belarus which were warmly received by the people in Belarus. These activities included the film week, photo show, China Day 2010 and the National Day reception. From 21 October to 9 November, a Chinese university delegation visited Belarus. From 12 to 16 May, Minister of Defense of Belarus Yuri Zhadobin visited China. From 22 to 25 July, Member of the Central Military Commission and Commander of Second Artillery Corps General Jing Zhiyuan visited Belarus.
