BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's highest legislative body, arrives in Windhoek on Thursday for an official good-will visit to the Republic of Namibia.
The following are some basic facts about Namibia.
Located in Southern Africa, Namibia borders Angola, Zambia, Botswana and South Africa and has an area of 824,000 sq km. Windhoek is the capital city of the country and English serves as the official language.
Among its population of 2.1 million, 88 percent are black and 90 percent are Christians.
Independence came to Namibia on March 21, 1990, following multiparty elections and the establishment of a constitution.
As a dry country, Namibia is largely reliant on mining, which accounts for about 20 percent of its gross domestic product. Its natural resources include diamonds, uranium, copper, lead, zinc, gold and other minerals.
Fishing and agriculture are the other two pillar industries of Namibia.
In recent years, the Namibian government has adopted many policies to maintain economic growth. In 2008, the GDP of Namibia stood at 8.6 billion U.S. dollars, up 2.7 percent over the previous year, with the per capita figure reaching 4,100 dollars.
Since establishing diplomatic ties on March 22, 1990, China and Namibia have steadily promoted their bilateral relationship. In 2010, two-way trade rose 31.1 percent year-on-year to 713 million U.S. dollars.
