Chinese leaders meet Turkmen President, pledging cooperation

BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese leaders on Wednesday met with visiting Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, vowing to strengthen bilateral ties and upgrade cooperation.

Chinese President Hu Jintao said that it is a policy of the Chinese government to develop friendly and cooperative relations with Turkmenistan on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits.

Hu proposed to strengthen political trust with Turkmenistan, enhance high-level exchanges, boost already-substantial cooperation in the energy field and non-energy sectors such as transportation, telecommunications, chemicals, textile and agriculture.

After their meeting, the two presidents signed a joint declaration on deepening bilateral friendly cooperation and an agreement on increasing Turkmenistan's natural gas supply to China.

Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo called on the two states to give full play to the roles of their parliaments in promoting friendly exchanges at various levels and in different fields so as to further bilateral ties. The two sides could also enhance exchanges of experience in governance, as well as the building of democracy and legislation, Wu said.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao proposed that the two nations should fortify their cooperation on the down-and-upper streams of the chemical industry to establish a long-term strategic partnership on energy cooperation, and boost two-way collaboration on high technology in an aim to establish balanced, comprehensive and high-quality trade relations.

Berdymukhamedov arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for a four-day state visit to China. It is the president's third state visit to China since becoming leader of Turkmenistan in 2007.

On Wednesday afternoon, Berdymukhamedov was awarded the title of emeritus professor of Peking University at the Great Hall of the People.

Berdymukhamedov, as an outstanding medical expert, is deserved for the title, Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong said, noting that the title also shows Chinese people's deep friendship for president Berdymukhamedov and people of Turkmenistan.

Feeling deeply honored to receive the title, Berdymukhamedov said he will treasure this honor and continue to boost the development of bilateral friendly cooperation.

He also called on institutions of higher education of both countries to enhance exchanges and cooperation, so as to make new contribution to the bilateral friendship.

Berdymukhamedov also paid a visit to China's Ministry of Public Security, accompanied by Chinese State Councilor Meng Jianzhu, who is also the public security minister.

Berdymukhamedov said that he hopes the two countries to strengthen law enforcement and security cooperation so as to create peaceful environment for their development.

Vice Chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Chen Zhili and Turkmen Vice Prime Minister Rashid Meredov on Wednesday evening watched the performance of artists from both countries.

Besides Beijing trip, Berdymukhamedov will also travel to the southern cities of Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
