Chairman Wu lists progress of NPC's work in 2006

China's Standing Committee of the National People's Congress(NPC) has made breakthroughs in fulfilling its responsibilities this year, Chairman Wu Bangguo said here Friday.

This year, the Standing Committee of the 10th National People's Congress deliberated 24 draft laws and law-related issues and passed 15. Five draft laws were submitted to next year's NPC for deliberation.

The standing committee also inspected the enforcement of 12 laws regarding issues like the building of socialist new countryside and the building of an innovative country, and heard and deliberated 11 work reports by the government, the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate.

NPC deputies were playing a bigger role in raising legislative suggestions. The standing committee had dealt with all 1,006 motions and 6,567 proposals put forward by deputies, said Wu at the 25th session of the NPC Standing Committee, which concluded on Friday.

In addition, Wu said more exchanges took place between the NPC and foreign parliaments this year, including parliaments of Russia,the United States, Japan, India, Australia, Brazil, Chile, South Africa and Egypt.

Wu also presided over a lecture on the legal system of international treaties held by the standing committee Friday afternoon.
